As this game commenced, Fremantle could still make the eight and play finals. They needed to win this game and for Essendon to lose to Collingwood later in the day. The Saints were no hope unless they won by 20 goals and Essendon lost by the same margin, as there was a 20% gap in percentage between the teams. The Saints flogged Freo, who seemed barely interested, but it was all too little, too late for the Saints season which had begun with such hope and ended in disappointment.
